Extension of the Museum of Man and Nature to create the Bavarian Museum of Natural History , München (D), 5. prize

It is its expansive, symmetrical structure that makes Nymphenburg Palace such a captivating ensemble. Given this sensitive urban planning context, our design opts against the development of the northern courtyard as foreseen in the call for entries, and instead proposes a new below-ground space beneath the Orangery Courtyard. This facilitates the retention of the overall ensemble and inner courtyards, avoids the creation of new above-ground volumes and enhances the existing building complex. We conceive the new exhibition rooms as large, flexible spaces in which exhibitions can be structured with the aid of various partition elements. A “block” between the exhibition rooms serves as a means of both access and room division. The skylight above the room for large pieces is embedded in the centre of the Orangery Courtyard.
