Justus Liebig University, Construction of a new teaching building for law and economics, Giessen (D)

The new structure is seen as a new entrance building and calling card for the law and economics campus on Alter Steinbacher Weg. Its independent architectural language underlines this idea and clearly differentiates it from the existing building. Our design adopts the original entrance situation – the “path” – and adds in the volumes which experience the most traffic to the left and right thereof. These volumes form the “foundations” for the “bridge” which extends over the “path” and houses all other functions. The original “path” is now located within the new structure and takes the form of the foyer. It is adjoined to its west by the cafeteria, which features a large terrace and therefore represents the point of transition to the outside area. On the opposite side a large flight of stairs featuring seating steps leads down to a lecture theatre one floor below. A fluid transition is created by the opening of the lecture theatre towards the foyer across its entire width. The upper floor – the “bridge” – accommodates all seminar rooms.
